Bernsdorf hat eine umfangreiche historisch gewachsene Industrie. Bereits um 1890 erlangten die Bernsdorfer Glaserzeugnisse Weltruf und wurden in viele Länder geliefert. Durch die reichen Vorkommen an hochwertigem Glassand im Raum Bernsdorf, Wiednitz, Hohenbocka, sowie die entdeckten und später erschlossenen Braunkohlevorkommen der Umgebung, wurde diese Entwicklung maßgeblich begünstigt.
